Ten million of these individuals seek medical guidance and/or treatment for it. Two million find their tinnitus to have a significant impact on their daily lives, affecting their ability to sleep, concentrate and maintain focus. It may impair one’s performance in the work environment and impact social interactions. Many have significant complaints of hyperacusis (loudness sensitivity) that may accompany the tinnitus and cause avoidance of certain situations.

The internet has scores of websites that discuss tinnitus and how to “cure” it. There are many drugs that have been tried over the years, including herbal remedies, to cure this condition. Ginkgo baloba and lipoflavinoids are mentioned frequently these days. However, there are no peer-reviewed studies or valid research conducted which have proven that any of these treatments work effectively.

There is currently no cure for tinnitus, as there remain many unanswered questions about its origins, but most research confirms a neurological origin of tinnitus perception. As a result, there are a number of treatment options now available that have proven to be effective in control over their lives.

Treatment Options

  • Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) using the Jastreboff Method
  • Informational and TRT counseling
  • Sound and Desensitization Therapy using specialized hearing devices and/or sound generators
  • Neuromonics

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

TRT is a treatment method developed by Dr. Jastreboff utilizing specialized counseling, cognitive therapy and sound generators. TRT methods using the Jastreboff Method are very specific and when followed, cause gradual and significant relief from tinnitus over 18-24 months. TRT may be used with the widest range of hearing and tinnitus conditions. It is effective in 80% of cases and is considered the international benchmark of tinnitus therapies.

Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment

Neuromonics is both a special FDA approved tinnitus device and a treatment procedure developed by Paul Davis, Ph.D., and Neuromonics Corp. It integrates several sound therapy elements into a patented two-phase treatment device, and Neuromonics counseling, to achieve desensitization over 6 - 8 months. Benefits occur more rapidly than by Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and offer immediate relief. Significant long-term benefit is obtained in over 90% of patients. Neuromonics is not appropriate for everyone. Only a thorough evaluation and interview can determine candidacy for Neuromonics, or for any of the other available treatment options.
